Thank you for being a shining example of what a father is. Because of the 13 short years that you were in my life, I know not to accept anything but the best from any man, especially the father of my children.
Thank you for instilling in me a love for books and a love for words. Thank you for encouraging me to get my first library card and for showing me how important it is to speak, and think intelligently.
Thank you for your snark and sense of humor. Thanks for the sarcasm.
Thank you for encouraging me to think for myself. You were rare in the sense that, you didn’t mind if your kids thought differently than you did, as long as we backed up our opinions with fact and intelligence. If you thought A and we thought B, you respected it as long as we used logic. You encouraged us to be individuals and I’ll always love and appreciate you for that.
Thank you for teaching me to never, ever look to ANYONE else for my own happiness. You taught me that if I wasn’t happy with myself, no one could make me happy. You taught me that not everyone’s opinion of me was valid, and you taught me to have my own mind.
Thanks for teaching me to question authority. You taught me things that weren’t in any of my textbooks. I remember dreading my days off from school for Columbus Day because I knew that I was gonna hear a lecture about what Columbus REALLY did. You taught me to question everything I learned and to not accept everything at face value. I may have gotten in trouble quite a few times for questioning my teachers, but thanks anyway.
Thanks for teaching me loyalty. No matter what was going on in our family, you never told our business. I could have been doing time in jail for murder, and if someone asked you what I was up to, you’d say, “Zindzi? She’s fine”. You made us feel protected and you always had our backs. You never said anything negative about us to anyone and I truly appreciate that.
Oh, and thanks for the eyebrows. Seriously.
Happy Father’s Day.
